Summary

Contemporary development of the landscape in Europe leads to environmental degradation, reduction of the extent of (semi)natural grasslands and impoverishment of species diversity. Management for the maintenance of species-rich grasslands and for their restoration is discussed from the following viewpoints: habitat characteristics, species diversity, root systems, traditional management practices, trends in contemporary grassland farming, deforested mountain areas and potential conflicts between the measures taken for production purposes and for nature conservation.
