Summary

A simple mathematical model was constructed to simulate growth of grass and white clover grown in association in swards continuously stocked with steers. The output of the model was validated against daily net herbage accumulation (DNHA) within exclusion areas, renewed every 2 weeks approximately, in swards maintained at heights of 5, 7 or 9 cm from April to July (Phase 1) and at 7 or 9 cm thereafter (Phase 2). Actual DNHA and clover content in the DNHA were reasonably well predicted.

In comparison to exclusion for one day (to represent daily growth outside the exclusion areas) DNHA over a 2-week exclusion period overestimated growth by 45 % in Phase 1 and 18 % in Phase 2. White clover growth as a percentage of herbage growth was unaffected by length of exclusion period, but was 1.7 times greater than clover content in the herbage mass.
