Summary

Two high-tannin content lines and two low-tannin content lines differing in flower colour and seed coat colour were crossed. Tannin in the seed coat was estimated using vanillin-HCl procedure. The additive-dominance model was applied to parental, F1, F2 and backcrosses generations. Additive genetic variance was found to govern the inheritance of tannin in the seed coat. Selection in positive and negative directions was successful. The effect on tannin content of major genes controlling flower pigmentation and seed coat colour are discussed.
