On 1991, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay got together to form MERCOSUR. When MERCOSUR was created, strong institutional innovation favored a change of paradigm. Agrifood sector has proved to be competitive in the production and international trade of grain and food. The key to success lies in harmonizing business strategies and public policies with competitive advantages. This poster has three central objectives: show what happened to MERCOSUR production and development, identify its position in world’s food and agribusiness trade with focus on Brazil and Argentina, and identify what are the main constraints, limitations and opportunities to food and agribusiness chains using new institutional economics analysis, chain and network analysis and STEP analysis. The paper follows presenting MERCOSUR strategies either for food or commodity supplier, and concludes that it became one of the most important commodity suppliers, but it should revisit its strategies in the food and agribusiness sector.
