This paper studied the vertical coordination between eleven food-processing plants in the peach-canning sector and their group of supplier-farmers in the south of Brazil. The main goal was to identify what models of vertical coordination exist between these firms and their suppliers (farmers), and what caused them to be organized in the current way. The Transaction Cost Economics and the Resource Based View theories were used to support the study. We found that the firms’ main motivations to work in a specific vertical coordination model could be supported by TCE and RBV when we consider this as an evolutionary process.
