Enhancing efficiency and increasing customer responsiveness often require restructuring of the agrifood chain. Improved vertical coordination can be obtained by reducing the number of autonomous decision-making stages in the chain. An example is the transformation of federated cooperatives into primary cooperatives. This paper develops several propositions on this transformation process, using economic organization and political economy theories. We present a first application of the theoretical framework to recently restructured federated cooperatives in The Netherlands.
