The prevailing international chain conferences have shown that the main organisations in the agri-food sector are no longer single enterprises but networks facing several challenges related to strategic management. Thus, the authors will elaborate in this paper on:

• whether chain networks can be compared with single companies, and

• whether strategic management for a large enterprise, consisting of a multitude of “strategic business units”, subsidiaries and affiliations, is transferable to a “supply chain network” or if modifications would be needed.
