Large quantities of data need to be exchanged between retailers and their suppliers in order to guarantee safety and quality in the Portuguese fruit and vegetable markets. Exchanging all these data manually is prohibitively expensive. In this paper a solution for this problem is proposed, and then validated, using prototypes applied to one of Portugal’s biggest retailers as a case study. The case study and the prototypes demonstrate that the proposed solution can effectively exchange large quantities of data without the need to increase the employee resource base required for this function, thus solving the problem.
