Information technology is a prerequisite to support communication between suppliers and customers. It enables documentation and identification of products and processes in food production and helps netchains fulfil their needs for transparency, information exchange and decision making. Systems that cover wider parts of food chains and provide benefits through information and knowledge management still contain ample room for improvement. This paper describes the structure of a chain-wide information system and the development of a reference information model for pork netchains. A reference information model is an implementation guideline suggesting specific information sets, data sources and access rights for users.
