Estimated losses in the post harvest period are about 1/3 of the crops. These losses can be attributed to unco-ordinated and therefore less product-specific handling by the actors. The aim of the investigation is to help to reduce these losses by co-ordination of the different activities of the participants.

Qualitative interviews were conducted in chains in Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands to investigate activities related to quality conservation.

Weak points identified in the chain included different views of quality, insufficient technical resources, insufficiently co-ordinated working processes and the insufficient demand of the consumer. Possible solutions would involve increasing communication and agreement among all participants, hiring qualified employees for all steps, ensuring that there is a common orientation of the working process on the need for a living, metabolising product and protection of a closed cool chain. Also necessary are efforts to improve the demand of the consumer.
