The presented research project deals with environmental management in the Dutch Food Industry and Agribusiness Chains. One of the major objectives is (1) to investigate whether it is possible and desirable to move the gravity of governmental environmental legislation from firm to supply chain performance. In the case of chain legislation firms will be “pushed” from inside the chain to maintain and develop environmental policies. We argue that this creates better changes for increasing the level of environmental management compared to the current rather normative legislation. Secondly we want (2) to describe different environmental management systems development based on organizational and (strategic) management specifics. This information is needed (3) to formulate and evaluate environmental policy models.
