Like other natural resources, fish channels experience declining productivity due to dwindling fish stocks. For Lake Victoria Nile perch, declining productivity is a result of institutional failure to integrate economic gains with sustainability. To establish the impact of export-oriented fish marketing on fisheries management and channel performance, a case study involving literature review, field interviews and observations of fishing and fish-marketing activities, was undertaken. The results show that lucrative export markets triggered an unprecedented fishing capacity, which unfortunately, was not controlled. As a result Nile perch production rapidly declined raising fears for its possible extinction. To meet domestic and export demand fishers however, continue to overfish and use unrecommended fishing gears, which further endanger the sustainability of the fishery. To maximize profits, actors are increasingly unwilling to share market information for fear of losing market power. Hence governance mechanisms that could integrate economic gains and sustainability need to be established.
