A hypothetical model proposes that learning management style is the key to convergence and learning performance among members in organizations (Österberg, 2004). Hakelius (1996) shows that decision making in cooperative organizations is characterized by divergence and lack of trust towards elected representatives. Today’s cooperative goals are assigned by elected representatives, which has been shown to work well in investor owned firms (IOFs). But cooperatives, contrary to IOFs, have a demand for participation in goal setting. At the same time, hierarchical communication rules the cooperative, and may force members to mistrust their representatives. We suggest that convergence over participative goal-setting will moderate trust and decision making in cooperative organizations; and that learning performance among members will increase if they communicate knowledge in a network fashion rather than a hierarchical one.
