This paper analyzes the information management and identifies causes and effects of the information asymmetry in a Brazilian coffee farmers’ cooperative.

As the information that the cooperative’s members receive is supplied by the managers, they have a greater opportunity to control the type and depth of the information. Thus, the potential of generating uncertainties means that information asymmetry weakens the trust in the transactions.

It was verified that the main causes of information asymmetry are the excessive centralization of the information with the managers, the absence of an information culture and the managers’ reductionist view regarding the information’s importance for the associates. It was also verified that the source of members’ distrust in the cooperative is linked with the asymmetry of internal information, especially commercialization information and plans. The asymmetry of external information, such as on market behavior, acts as a potential reducing element of members’ transactions with the cooperative.
