This paper focuses on export contracts for non-traditional crops and the involvement of local producers in global agro-food chains through delivery relationships with packers and brokers. The study among producers of chayote in Costa Rica confirms the importance of contractual conditions for improving input intensity in primary production and for reducing post-harvest delays in delivery. Quality improvement requires better input applications and higher labour intensity at farm-level. Supplier arrangements that guarantee frequent collection and timely payment are therefore of critical importance. Additional support from packers and exporters could enable farmers to improve product quality. Such support is likely to lead to a higher degree of producer loyalty.
