Changing market conditions in the food sector have weakened the primary producer’s competitive position in the supply chain. The object of this paper is to describe how competitive strategies could be implemented to increase competitive advantages among small-scale primary producers. Our findings from the Norwegian horticulture sector suggest that producers who are focused on customisation and cost leadership achieve competitive advantages, but are also vulnerable to fluctuations in market conditions. To achieve long-term competitive advantages, the small-scale producer therefore has to be flexible and implement a broader set of competitive tools.
