The purpose of this paper is to investigate if there are specific weaknesses among agricultural-related firms integrating upstream in the value chain that may make it difficult for them to succeed in the market. To address this question, we compare resources, strategy and entrepreneurial orientation among 1038 agricultural-related and âordinaryâ small firms receiving loans and grants from the Norwegian Industrial and Regional Development Fund in 2001. The results from the comparison indicate that there are some specific weaknesses among the agricultural-related firms. The agricultural-related firmsâ score lower than the âordinaryâ firms on certain resources and regarding entrepreneurial orientation. They also got a somewhat vaguer strategic positioning.
