This paper analyses the role and implications of international standards for developing countries in the context of concentrated buyer-driven supply chains. It first reviews existing literature on Global Commodity Chain Analysis, standards, market power and governance and then applies evidence from two sectors- Brazilian beef and Zimbabwean fresh produce export supply chains. Findings show that benefits in export supply chains may be limited and more opportunities may lie in developing alternative domestic markets.
