This paper presents the main conclusions of an international benchmark study of traceability systems in four supply chains (meat, dairy, fruit & vegetables, and grain/bread) in seven countries (Australia, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, UK, and USA). It shows that there is still little chain co-operation and transparency; (parts of) traceability are often only arranged between company walls. However, there are a number of best practices that have a nearly full traceability in the supply chain. Bottle-necks for chain traceability are discussed and three levels of traceability performance are deduced: compliance, process improvement and branding. The paper concludes with a cost-benefit discussion related to issues that need to be taken into consideration when an organisation develops its chain traceability strategy.
