This paper will explore Spainâs âDenominaciones de Origenâ, a protective legislation dedicated to the authenticity of traditional agricultural products and their geographical place of origin. The commercialisation of one of these âproductos AndaluÃ§esâ, olive oil, provides the ethnographic framework through which the paper explores Denominaciones de Origenâs cultural politics as they are played out in the smart superstores in the South of Spain. The paper associates itself with the politics of âoriginâ within current debates regarding the European Unionâs concern with regional culinary diversities.
