During the last 10-20 years we have witnessed the development of several different methods for public participation in technology policy and assessment. Consensus conferences, scenario workshops, citizen panels, citizen summits, round tables and café-workshops are some examples. The methods share a common ambition in providing affected citizens an opportunity to deliberate and formulate policy advice on important issues. At the same time they differ in numerous ways, such as with respect to how the deliberations are organized, how they perceive “affected citizens”, how topics are framed, and how the participants state their opinions. Hence, there is no “standard approach” to participatory processes. Food policy embraces numerous topics that could be – and has been – debated in participatory projects. Food safety, genetically modification of food, labelling, health and nutritional issues, and the ethics of food production are examples. But how can we know what participatory method to choose when we have a topic at hand? This is the key question for this presentation. It focuses on how the characteristics of a topic, the purpose of the participatory process and key characteristic of participatory processes needs to be pared for a successful participatory process.
