Pig farmers experience a discrepancy between their view on ‘doing good to animals’ and the societal pressure to adapt their farming procedures. Legislation is regarded by them as making a schism between animal welfare and rational production, omitting the opportunities of optimizing welfare from a stockmanship’s perspective. At the same time, it seems that the governmental intervention hardly reduces the societal unease. An explorative study revealed that a discrepancy of moral systems between urban and rural populations plays a larger role than lack of morality. A project has started which combines sociology, ethics and interactive design to study a solution to this discrepancy. It is hypothesized that providing some degree of professional autonomy to farmers is useful for building a system that restores the balance between being responsible and having the opportunity to act on basis of the own values. This may result in a system that has a better chance of being maintainable because it is founded on the values of the farmers. Interviews amongst a structured variety of farmers are held to collect their typical farmers’ values. This data set is used to make the farmers’ morality explicit. On basis of this, a code of conduct (directed to the own professional group) and a code of practice (directed to the rest of society) is developed, verified and applied on some actual (controversial) cases.
