Principlism, or principle based ethics, was one of the first approaches in bioethics. An important problem in principlism is that the interpretation of highly generalized principles to a certain practice with all its particularities, is not self-evident. Even with the idea of a reflective equilibrium and a specification of these principles, one still needs certain criteria that indicate how a principle is to be interpreted in practice. Part of the issue lies in the very idea of a method of ethics. However, to reduce ethics to mere practical regularities would also imply a problem of justification. So, the move away from theory has not solved this foundational problem either. Especially in regard to the ongoing GM-controversy it will be necessary to develop a democratic alternative for principlism in food ethics. Maybe ethics can only partly be made explicit, in the form of rules, guidelines or principles, with the sole purpose of clarity or uniformity. But then, what will be left to justify our beliefs?
