The ethical matrix approach was developed by Prof Ben Mepham and his colleagues at the University of Nottingham in the early 1990s. Since then the approach has received increasing attention and has been used by several researchers in different projects related to assessing ethical impacts of different food production technologies and other policy options of societal concern. At the last EurSafe conference Prof Mepham reviewed the most important applications of and objections to the method. In this paper I would like to present results from my doctoral project on justification of ethical advice, in particular justification related to the ethical matrix approach. The project involves assessment of coherentist and pragmatist approaches to moral justification, and their appropriateness in this context. I will present a more ambitious version of the matrix approach than what Mepham advocates, involving not only assessment of ethical concerns, but reaching judgements on ethical issues in a participatory process. A central problem is how to prioritise between values within the framework of value pluralism. The particular version of the ethical matrix approach to be presented builds on applications of the method performed at the Norwegian Research Ethics Committees, but will include recommendations for revisions of the method in light of metaethical concerns about justification.
