In this paper we draw on interdisciplinary work conducted by the Welfare Quality project (a large EU project on farm animal welfare – www.welfarequality.net) to critically compare and contrast the different ways in which scientists and consumers ‘frame’ animal welfare. Furthermore, we examine how different ways of framing this issue embody different ethical concerns, different practical competencies and different techniques of information gathering and evaluation. Finally, given these differences, we address the issue of how one might best go about integrating consumer and scientific concerns.
