The destructive trends of an increasingly uneven commodification of the world agro-food system are dramatically manifested in the global South –pitiable working conditions for contracting farmers, widespread pollution, child labor, or agrochemical poisoning are pervasive. Amid the spectacular demand for organic products worldwide, some small family farmers communities see in certified organic agriculture a promising way for linking small diversified producers to large prospective markets. However, the extent to which local mobilization process are able to transcend the institutional arena and effect a productive transformation in the community remains uncertain. Through a case study in Santa Rosa, a community of small family farmers in a tobacco growing region of southern Brazil, my research explores the ways in which “organic” is reconstructed at the local level. I argue that the characteristics of the organic momentum (global growth, a holistic nature-society vision, “natural” production techniques, international regulatory scope) constitutes an unprecedented conjuncture that is able to mobilize a diverse set of local actors in small family farmers communities. However, blending local claims of life quality improvement for the rural families with the certified organic market as “ethical and organic” can be a highly contradictory idiom from which to fight pervasive rural exclusion. How to reconcile exorbitant premiums paid by educated, wealthy urban consumers with claims of social justice for the excluded? How does the practice of input substitution jeopardize the central role of diversified management in small family farms?
