This paper outlines an integrative sustainability concept developed in the recent research project „Global sustainable development. Perspectives for Germany“of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres (HGF) under the direction of ITAS, deals with the operationalisation of this concept for the food and agriculture sector and compares this approach with other German sustainability studies. The basic idea of the integrative concept was to start from three constitutive elements of sustainable development (intra- and intergenerational justice, global perspective, anthropocentric view). In a next step, these constitutive elements were “translated” into three so-called general sustainability goals:

• securing human existence;

• maintaining society’s productive potential;

• preserving society’s options for development and action.

In a further step, the goals were specified by 15 substantial sustainability rules, building the core element of the concept. The substantial rules were used to describe the sustainability situation of Germany and of the German food and agriculture sector. The substantial rules were also the basis for indicators for the food and agriculture sector. These indicators map the different dimensions and were developed for the whole food chain, while other studies concentrate on agriculture and the ecological dimension. The future sustainability performance depends to a considerable extent on the development of fundamental societal framework conditions, which were analysed in three explorative scenarios (liberalisation and globalisation, modernisation, regionalisation and changes in values). The results of the scenario analysis show that with explorative scenarios the realisation problems of sustainability strategies can be better examined than with normative scenarios.
