Summary

Monthly test days for milk somatic cell count (SCC) were carried out throughout lactation on 3202, 600 and 564 Churra, Latxa and Manchega ewes belonging to 22, 11 and 12 flocks respectively. The mean SCC in each breed was 1501, 455 and 1003 × 10³ cells/ml. Percentages of test days below 250 × 10³ cells/ml were 44.4 % in Churra, 74.8 % in Latxa and 50.0% in Manchega. Flock, stage of lactation, type of birth and parity were also analysed as SCC variation factors. SCC was higher at the end of lactation, in twin-birth and pluriparous ewes. The SCC variability between flocks was high. The mean SCC of bulk tank milk of 1670, 79 and 61 sheep flocks of the Spanish Autonomous Communities of Castile-León, the Basque Country and Castile-La Mancha was 1895, 768 and 1429 × 10³ cells/ml respectively; only 6.5, 37.6 and 16.0% of samplings were lower than 500 × 10³ cells/ml in each Community. The type of milking (machine or hand) had a significant effect on bulk tank milk SCC in the three Communities. There were also seasonal differences of SCC; the highest values were reported in autumn.

The effects flock, stage of lactation, type of birth and parity were also studied on a total 1297, 3437 and 100 goats of Murciana-Granadina, Malagueña and Verata breeds belonging to 22, 42 and 1 flocks, respectively. SCC was higher at the end of lactation, in multiple birth and pluriparous goats. Percentages of test days below 500 × 10³ cells/ml were 43.7, 46.3 and 48.0% in Murciana-Granadina, Malagueña and Verata goats; SCC means in each breed were 1256, 1329, and 1089 × 10³ cells/ml, respectively. The mean SCC of bulk tank milk of 53 and 12 goat flocks of Castile-León and Andalusia was 1616 and 2137 × 10³ cells/ml, respectively. As for the ewes, the highest SCC took place in autumn.

In both species staphylococci were the most prevalent bacterial group (66 to 89%).
