Summary

Milk of 20 animals of white hornless short-haired goats was analyzed 9 times from the 7th to the 255th days of the first lactation. In addition to the somatic cell count (SCC) measured on a Fossomatic apparatus, some other basic milk components, nitrogenous substances, mineral substances, and some physical, chemical and technological properties were studied. Analyses of 146 samples from animals with clinically healthy mammary glands were evaluated.

In the individual samples the SCC values ranged between 78,000 and 4.520,000 per ml. Significant negative correlations were found between the SCC and the content of lactose, whey protein, casein number, Ca, inorganic and total P, K, the K/Na ration, titrable acidity and alcohol stability. Positive correlations were observed between the SCC and the ash content, electrical conductivity and the period of rennet coagulation.

Up to a SCC of 750,000 per 1 ml, no significant changes in the averages of the studied indicators occurred (only the K value and the K/Na ration changed when the average count exceeded 500,000/ml). However, when the values of SCC in the individual samples exceeded 750,000 per ml, the variability of several milk components and properties changed considerably.
