Summary

Smatic cell count (SCC), California Mastitis Test (CMT) and its relationship with milk acidity (ph and titratable acidity) were studied on individual milk samples taken from Manchega ewes over a five month lactation period. Every ewe (n=72) was controlled weekly after parturition and every fortnight thereafter. Individual milk samples were collected during the morning machine milking and pH, titratable acidity Domic (NaOH N/9), CMT and SCC (fossomatic 90) were determined. From a total of 998 milk samples, 74% had a somatic cell count lower than 250×10³ cells/ml and only 10% had a count higher than 1.0×10⁶. Results showed an insignificant interaction between lactation stage and the CMT-SCC groups. Lactation significantly affected titratable acidity (p<0.05) and SCC (p<0.001), although it did not affect pH values and CMT responses. The average value of cells/ml of Manchega milk ewe’s in the suckling period (35 days) was significantly lower than in the milking period. By contrast, Dornic acidity decreased until the third month and increased towards the end of lactation. SCC which was higher than 10×10⁶ and CMT=3 showed significant differences (p<0.001) in pH and Dornic values compared with the rest of the milk samples. The correlation between the different variables was also studied.
