Summary

The aim of this study was to find out the influence of the stage and number of lactation, as well as the type of milking, on the somatic cell count (SCC) in the milk of healthy goats reared in Bulgaria.

During the sucking period, the SCC was 358×10³/ml on the average, while by the end of lactation it increased to 687×10³/ml. The average SCC in the goat’s milk was respectively: at first lactation - 363×10³/ml at second lactation - 460×10³/ml at third lactation -618×10³/ml. That is, the SCC increased at each following lactation.

The type of milking also influenced the cell content in milk. In the case of hand milking, the SCC was 250×10³/ml on the average, whereas in machine milking it was 609×10³/ml. All of the above differences are statistically significant.

There were breed-determined differences as well, but not significant.
