Summary

An Alpine milking herd was used to study the effects of parity and milk production on the somatic cell counts (SCC) in goat milk. Overall means of SCC, standard plate count (SPC), % fat, % protein, % lactose, and % solids-non-fat (SNF) and milk production were 1.2×106 cells/ml, 9.5×l03cfu/ml, 3.73, 2.80, 4.42, 7.85 and 2.69 kg/doe/day, respectively. Parity of milking does did not affect any variables (P>0.05) except milk production. Does of Parity 1 produced less milk than those of Parities 2 and 3 (P<0.05). Goat milk contained high SCC and exceeded the one million limit of the Pasteurized Milk Ordinance during most of the late lactation stages. However, mastitic conditions were absent in all experimental goats during the lactation period. Histological and pathological tests on fresh tissues of udder halves demonstrated no mammary gland change or other mastitic evidence.

Therefore, high SCC in goat milk seemed natural, particularly in late stages of lactation. Goat milk showed low SPC, indicating a high microbial quality. Correlation analysis revealed that SCC had a positive relationship with SPC (r=0.44, P<0.001) and a negative relationship with milk production (r=-0.46, P<0.001). These significant correlation coefficients may be useful in assessing goat milk quality. As lactation progressed, SCC and SPC increased and milk production decreased (P<0.001).
