Abstract

A monthly follow-up, including bacteriology and somatic cell counts of milk, was conducted in 799 ewes of the Latxa breed. Taking bacteriology as reference, a threshold value between 200,000 and 250,000 cel/ml was considered to be useful to determine the bacteriological status of the mammary gland, as stated previously. Mammary halves with negative results in every bacteriological control (n=579) showed mean somatic cell counts of 185,050 cel/ml, never reaching 250,000 cel/ml, in the standard lactation period. Halves with positive bacteriological results in every control (n=92) had mean somatic cell counts of 1,445,926 cel/ml, always over 1,000,000 cel/ml during the lactation period.
