Summary

Because of the sanitary importance of mastitis, it is necessary to control the hygienic conditions of the sheep flocks, particularly the sanitary control of the udder which can actually be carried out through the milk somatic cell count (SCC). After a review of the literature, regarding the quantitative and qualitative aspects of somatic cells and the interfering physiological, metabolic, and pathological factors found by different authors to influence the number of somatic cell in sound milk, operating proposals are given. A wider use of the differential cell count (DCC) like SCC, the application of the bovine regulations in the sheep milk production and closer attention to the hygienic-sanitary, nutritional and managerial problems are suggested.
