Summary

Monthly milk samples of 270 Alpine and Saanen, intensively reared goats were bacteriologically examined and their somatic cells count were deter-mined. From 1988, up to 1993 the somatic cells count trend was studied in 40 goats, 15 of these were in their first lactation in 1988 while the re-maining 25 had had their fist lactation in 1989. During the six-year pe-riod neither causal agents of mastitis had been detected nor was clinical evidence of mastitis observed; furthermore all 40 subjects were serologically negative towards Caprine Arthritis-Encephalitis Virus (CAEV). From april to august, when the animals are in full lactation, the mean somatic cells count was 684,000/ml. In march, at the beginning of lactation, the mean value was 804,000/ml; in September, with the first oestrus, the mean value increased to 1,638,000/ml; the highest values were detected at the end of lactation: 1,854,000/ml and 3,412,000/ml in October and november respectively, concurrently with the decrease of milk production in goats already pregnant. No significative differences were demonstrated among the trends observed in the successive lactations. When comparing the mean cells count of the two breeds during the april-august period, this resul-ted lower for the 10 Saanen goats examined (575,000/ml) than for the 30 Alpine goats (716,000/ml).
