Summary

Somatic cell count represents, for sheep milk too, a useful indicator of the udder’s health state as it detects hardly diagnosticable pathologies (subclinical mastitis). Recent studies carried out on Delle Langhe sheep in N-W Italy show high variability of somatic cell count (SCC) and linear score [LS=log₂ (SCC/12500)] values in bulk and individual milk samples.

Feeds and feeding techniques were among the main variation factors; individual milk samples from ewes fed with ensiled fodders or alfalfa hay and concentrates showed lower SCC values than those fed mixed hay. SCC and LS varied in relation to offspring period, days since lambing, milking technique and number of ewes/flock. Correlations between SCC, LS values and milk yield, quality, and rheological parameters are shown.
