Summary

Horses and dromedaries are non negligible elements of breeding in sub-arid and arid areas. Unlike other animal species, the rules to be followed for their feeding are still badly known because of a lack of knowledge concerning their digestive physiology . Whereas for the last twenty years researches on horses have allowed us to make clear in particular the part of microbial digestion in the large intestine we still know very little as far as the main features of the working of the camelidaeâs pre-stomach are concerned.

Concerning the horse, in order to optimize the use of the intake, it is better to give fodders under a long form and in large meals in order to facilitate a quick transit to the caecum where energy-giving nutriments are produced thanks to the degradation of plant cell-walls by microbes. On the other hand, concentrates and more particularly nitrogenous ones must be ingested in small meals of a maximum volume of 3 to 4 litres so that they can remain in the stomach, which makes their digestion in the small intestine easier. The part played by microbial proteosynthesis remains very uncertain as far as the nitrogenous nutrition of this species is concerned.

Concerning dromedaries, as we know little, we have to start from empirical observations and to reason by analogy with cattle and horses. We must also take into account the conditions in which the animals can drink which can vary a lot and interfere with the use of feeds, in particular in the pre-stomachs.

To conclude, we may say that thanks to what we know at present we may give the main lines of horse feeding but the collecting of information on the digestive particularities of dromedaries and even donkeys is urgent so that we can efficiently prepare diets for these species which play an important part in the agricultural production system of the areas which are concerned.
