Summary

This paper reviews the current utilization of sub-tropical small ruminant breeds.

The sub-tropical sheep and goat breeds are characterized by small size, low productivity and ability to breed all year round.

Pure breeding has been the main use of small ruminant breeds. Selection for increased productivity has not been effective due to lack of breed infrastructure and long term planing. Other uses of sub-tropical small ruminant breed is crossbreeding: grading up, forming synthetic, exploiation of heterosis and crossing with other sub-tropical breeds. Most of crossbreeding has been with temperate breeds but the exchange of germ-plasm among sub-tropical countries is stressed.
