Summary

Buffaloes are mostly raised in developing countries in small holdings. Their productive and reproductive performances are affected by the prevailing environmental and managerial conditions under such system of production.

Puberty in buffalo heifers could be enhanced though good management and feeding conditions. Silent ovulation is a problem in large herds but this is not the case in small holdings where frequent bellowing is the most used sign for detection of oestrus. Resumption of cyclic activity postpartum is influenced by feeding level, type of feeding and suckling. Calving interval in small holdings (13.5 mo) is much shorter than that reported in large herds (>16.7 mo). Calving tends to be more frequent in colder months of the year at both research farms and small holdings. Physiological changes associated with seasonality of breeding activity in the buffalo are discussed. It is concluded that reproductive performance in the buffalo could be improved considerably through nutritional conditions and management practices.
