Summary

Poor quality and seasonal fluctuations on availability of food resources are the main constraints for sheep production in arid regions. The productive responses to undernutrition at different physiological stages are discussed with emphasis on body fat catabolism as endogenous source of energy togheter with the metabolic or dietary factors involved. Methods suitable to predict body composition “in vivo” are urgently required if experimental evidence has to be achieved in those areas.
