In all the environmental conditions, feeding behaviour of goats is distinguished by a more selective choice of actually ingested vegetable parts than in other ruminants.

Under intensive production systems, this marked selection of feeds results in a clear disadvantage because an important part of green or conserved forage given is wasted. The behavioural characteristics of goats are rather considered as an advantage under extensive conditions. The data obtained on animals using trees and shrubs permit to show the good aptitude of goats to use this kind of vegetation.

Total dry matter intake is influenced by two main factors when forages are supplied ad libitum : quality of forages which is characterized by the “ingestibility” and digestibility, and the proportion of concentrate feed in the ration. In the cases of systems using rangelands, methodological constraints and the particularities of feeding behaviour of goats make difficult the estimation of feed amount ingested by goats.

The rations with good quality forages seem to be digested by sheep and goats similarly. In the case of straws or tropical forages with low quality, the digestibility of dry matter and crude fiber, and in some extent of protein is significantly higher in goats than in other ruminants .

The water requirements and intake of goats would be 10-25 % lower than those of sheep because of a lower water turn-over. At high temperature, goats can adapt easily by reducing water losses in feces and also in evaporated water.

Under very extensive systems, the fact that goats stay in certain environments where forage availabilities are very limited, leads to expect the efficiency of the dietary utilization for maintenance and production to be higher in these goats.
