Summary

Exposing lactating Friesians to heat stress resulted in a significant decrease in daily milk yield, plasma Cortisol and glucose and serum total lipids, cholesterol and total proteins. Blood enzyme activities (SGOT and SGPT), rectal temperature and respiration rate increased significantly during heat stress. Cooling treatment of heat stressed lactating Friesians using drinking cool water and hosing the cows with water led to a significant improvement in daily milk yield and restoration tendency in Cortisol, glucose, total lipids, cholesterol and total proteins. At the same time a significant decrease was recorded in each of SGOT and SGPT activities, rectal temperature and respiration rate.
