Summary

Six dry female camels, six Barki ewes and six Baladi does were used to investigate species difference in response to water deprivation during hot months (July and August). Animals within each species were divided at random into two equal groups, one watered once every three days (treated) while the other watered daily (control).

Dry matter intake per kgw^0.75 declined (P < 0.01) as a result of dehydration by 26.0, 9.8 and 8.3% for camels, sheep and goats, respectively, while corresponding reductions in drinking water per kgw^0.82 were 15.9, 33.8 and 29.0%. Water excretion (urine + faecal moisture) represented 23.0 and 16.6% of water intake (drinking + dietary water) in hydrated and dehydrated camels, respectively. Corresponding values for sheep and goats were 34.6 and 33.7%, and 29.6 and 33.9%. Camels showed the lowest (P < 0.01) values for dry matter intake, drinking water and water excretion per unit body weight compared to both sheep and goats. Species and time of day affected (P < 0.05) respiration rate, rectal and skin temperatures while treatment had no effect on these parameters.
