Summary

The smallholder farmer is faced with a number of problems in the operation of his enterprise as the units often do not economically justify the various implements necessary, therefore letting farmers’ organizations play an important role.

On the farm problems like feed security play an important role as they influence health and eventually the economic suitability of the production. Systematic fodder production and eventually fodder conservation involves management skills which are often inadequately covered by the extension service. Finally the research programme might not adequately cover the need for the smallholder farmer leaving the extension service with little to advise the farmer on.

Also the socio-economic aspects of smallholder farmers on the society are important and often not recognised.
