Summary

The bulk of sheep milk produced in the Mediterranean comes from multiple purpose mountain and lowland breeds. However, due to various reasons some of the milking breeds have evolved into dairy type animals which, in certain cases, demonstrate superior prolificacy, too. Considered in this paper are sheep breeds exceeding 150 kg of milk and/or 1.5 prolificacy. Described are the dairy type breeds Lacaune, Sarda, Massese, and Awassi and the dairy and prolific type breeds Comisana, Delle Langhe, Zakinthos, Skopelos, and Chios. Some conclusions are drawn with regard to the potential and the valorization of the dairy and prolific sheep populations in the Mediterranean basin.
