Summary

A slaughter test was done on 248 male calves, 18 months old representing twenty genotypes. The genotypes involved three purebreds: The native Egyptian, Baladi (BAL), Braunvieh (BV) and Friesian (FR)); twelve Baladi halfbreds with each of: Red Angler (RA), Braunvieh, German Braunvieh (DBV), Tyrolean Grey (GV), Friesian, Fleckvieh (FV), Gelbvieh (GBV), Pinzgauer (PG), Swedish Red (SRB), Charolais (CHM for males and CHF for females) and Normande (NOR) and five three quarterbreds resulting from backcrossing females of the first five halfbreds to their respective foreign breeds (RA, BV, DBV, GV and FR). Empty body weight (EBW) at slaughter was classified into six groups of 25 kg interval starting with < 325 kg and terminating by > 424 kg.

Results obtained indicate that the use of European breeds for crossing with Baladi cattle would improve slaughter weight, dressing percentage and edible meat yield. Charolais crosses were the best in almost all comparisons, while SRB and PG halfbreds were the worst. The halfbreds tended to have slightly higher percentages of EBW to carcass, boneless beef and edible parts than their corresponding three quarter breds. The increase in EBW at slaughter resulted in significant increase of dressing percentage, percentage of boneless beef,% edible parts and meat bone ratio.
