Summary

The structure of livestock production in fourteen Mediterranean countries is reviewed. The six northern countries have high consumption levels for milk and meat. With stable populations, they have the capacity to respond to future growth in demand, though both livestock products and feed grain imports are increasing. In the eight southern countries, consumption levels are one-fifth of those in the northern countries. With marginal increases in per capita intake, population growth will create an eventual requirement for an additional six million tonnes of meat, and twenty million tonnes of milk, an increase of 200% over present supplies.

Technical possibilities for responding to this challenge are explored. These include: improved rangeland management; improving pasture productivity; more intensive use of fallow land; better utilization of imported feeds; introduction of livestock production systems new to the area; genetic improvement of livestock; and intensified adaptive research. It is emphasized that many of the constraints on increased production are structural, social or political, rather than technical in nature.
