Abstract

The government policy with respect to livestock has been changed over the last few years from operating state farms to encouraging private cattle enterprises, and to shift livestock projects from the old land to the reclaimed land off the Nile valley. The dominating type of farming in these areas is mixed crop-cattle farming of small holdings ranging from about 5-30 feddans per farm.

Data compiled over a three-year period, 1986-1988, from field surveys of the small farms owned by settlers in the dry new land who comprised ordinary farmers and university graduates made it possible to draw basic statistical estimates for important productive and reproductive performance of cattle and buffaloes in the reclaimed land.

Results indicated that estimated milk yield of cows and buffaloes may compare favorably with the results obtained from research work conducted on state-operated farms in similar areas. Reproduction performance in terms of calving rates and calving intervals showed better regularity in most cases.

Analysis of socio-economic data showed that small holders, through better utilization of their limited resources, achieved higher income from milk yield per animal, per unit labour, and per unit land.

The results, though promising, revealed the necessity for an integrated programme for the comprehensive development of the livestock/crop system prevailing in the reclaimed land. The programme has to consider the complexity of the various factors related to the system, and would aim at maximizing the utilization of the most scarce elements, namely, land, water and power.
