Climate change, population growth and the global economic downturn have had a negative impact on food security. A need to double the food supply by 2050, loss of existing arable land and increases in transportation costs have acted as stimuli for the development of urban agriculture. Some case studies are described and the related positive and negative impacts are discussed. System defects are highlighted and remedies proposed.
