That food reaches plates in the UK is a logistical feat in a country where fewer than 2% of population grow it and many ingredients travel thousands of miles. Yet the way food travels cannot be sustained. More important than the direct environmental, social and economic costs of transporting it is how the UK’s food distribution infrastructure cements in place production, consumption and trading practices that destroy the environment, harm animals and are deeply unjust. The focus of this paper is to describe the ‘scenario’ method that has been used by the Food Ethics Council to explore challenges and opportunities with stakeholders in food distribution. The scenario method was pioneered in the business community and is now widely used in policy, including in UK policy development relating to food and farming. We reflect on its value as a tool for ethical deliberation.
